Project #10 - Translation Device
Objective
Following the 7 feminist data principles, create a translation device in p5 that translates external JSON datasets into feminist data.

Reflection
I've been thinking a lot about spatial politics in relation to abolition
work / policing alternatives. In thinking about how many resources
policing work takes up, and how those spatial resources could be used
alternatively, it's important to help to share with others and help
people envision policing alternatives. For this assignment, I want to
create a translation device that highlights the spatial consequences of
the carceral state, particularly focusing on the proposed expasion of
the
Manhattan Detention Complex
to 1,500,000 sq feet. I've been thinking a lot about ways to talk to my
parents about alternatives to policing a way that is tangible to them. I
feel like a lot of the way that's talked about that is through the
budget, but when the numbers are typically in the millions of dollars,
that is typically quite impossible to perceive for many folks. Through
subversive data, this quick exploration aims to negotiate a spatial
repurposing of the Manhattan Detention Complex.
A quick note: at the start of my research, I was unable to find any APIs that
contained the data that I was looking for, so I opted to create my own
simple spreadsheet that I translated to JSON using the same python
script I wrote for our data visualization assignment.
